INSPIRING IN FRANCE & GERMANY

Learning Expedition

For this Economic Interest Grouping of craftsmen specialised in energy saving, we worked on a programme combining two ecologically voluntary towns: Ungersheim in Alsace, where Jean-Claude Mensch, the mayor, has made the town an energy self-sufficient place with the use of solar thermal energy, a photovoltaic power plant, the construction of a wood-fired boiler room, energy diagnostics and consequent work on public buildings, but also the creation of an Eco-Town as well as the purchase of a utility horse and an electrically propelled truck! Freiburg im Breisgau, on the other side of the border, is a more urbanised city that has become a pioneer in sustainable development in recent decades. For two days and with an urban planner guide and a local architect, our participants were able to attend the presentation of an intergenerational housing project, the visit of the Heliotrope revolving house whose photovoltaic modules installed on the roof produce more energy than the house consumes, but also to discover the solar ship, an economical tertiary building designed by the architect Rolf Disch. And finally, a detailed tour of the emblematic Vauban and Rieselfeld districts by an urban planner is a must.

Our craftsmen did not spare any energy!
